International Symposium on the Great Peace of Montréal

International Symposium on the Great Peace of Montréal

On August 4, 1701, over 1,300 representatives from 38 Indigenous nations, along with French and Canadian representatives, came together at the Callière estate in Montréal to make peace and end close to a century of conflict. This historic meeting led to an unprecedented moment of discussion, alliance, and negotiation. Together, they signed the Great Peace of Montréal.

Marking the 325th anniversary of the signing of the treaty, this symposium will bring together speakers from Canada, France, and the United States around a common goal: to offer a fresh take on this event, devoted to peace, remembrance, and the meeting of cultures. Over three days, participants will explore the origins, diplomatic practices, and impacts of the Great Peace. The programming will shine a light on recent research and Indigenous perspectives to better understand the circumstances that led to the signing of the treaty and its continued relevance to contemporary issues.
