While he is a leading member of BIM, Bénin International Musical, (which, by the way, will be performing at 9 p.m. on July 19, on the Parterre du Quartier des spectacles!), Jimmy Belah is also pursuing a solo career. In music he finds a refuge and in tradition, a harbour. Fascinated by live performances from a young age, this sensitive singer, experienced composer and multi-instrumentalist—guitar, drums, gong, maracas—has become an important Beninese cultural figure. Descendant of the Dahomey (Fon) people and inspired by Toba and Gogohoum rhythms, Jimmy Belah’s smooth Afro-rock music and songs, sung in his maternal Adija language, are influenced by the indigenous vodou culture that connects people to nature and to each other
