
Knowledge Transfer Event — Méthane Québec and the Living Lab – Carbon-Neutral Milk

The objective of this training session, jointly organized by the Living Lab – Carbon-Neutral Milk (Novalait) and Méthane Québec (Lactanet), two initiatives led by the Producteurs de lait du Québec (PLQ), is to provide the most recent scientific and applied knowledge on greenhouse gas emission reduction in dairy production.
In the morning, during the Méthane Québec section, teams from Lactanet and Agriclimat will present results collected on enteric methane within the project. This includes:
the development of a methane estimator based on data collected from Quebec farms;
best practices to implement for reducing enteric methane on farms;
the economic and environmental impact of these practices;
simulations of the effect of practices at the whole-farm level (GHG balance).
In the afternoon, as part of the Living Lab – Carbon-Neutral Milk section, researchers and field experts will present findings based on the latest scientific data and experiments conducted directly in farm settings. The various presentations will enable participants to:
deepen their understanding of carbon balance calculation methods adapted to Quebec dairy farms;
analyze variations in carbon balances from one farm to another and from one year to the next;
compare different calculation tools and approaches used in Canada and Europe;
identify agricultural practices likely to improve carbon balances at the farm level;
update their knowledge on agricultural soils and carbon sequestration;
develop skills related to advisory support;learn approaches for tailoring their interventions to the realities and concerns of agricultural producers.
