Words designate reality, and this includes the natural world. So what happens to reality when certain words for nature and natural phenomena are removed from dictionaries on the grounds that they are no longer in use? Does the natural world suffer as a result? Does it lose something? In The Lost Words, writer, academic and explorer Robert Macfarlane invites us to keep these words alive, and, by so doing, the natural world.
Come with the children. This book is for them!
