YESTERDAY’S RING

Yesterday's Ring is a country folk band from Montreal that was founded in Memphis, Tennessee in 2000 by vocalist Hugo Mudie, guitarist Fred Jacques and guitarist Louis Valiquette. Yesterday's Ring was born out of experiences on the road, while the musicians were touring the United States with their punk band, The Sainte Catherines. Influenced by their early experiences in the American South, and by country playing on the radio, the carefree musicians in their twenties began to write songs that would, over the years, become the soundtrack of the hectic, crazy life. of touring punks in the pre-internet era. Originally, Yesterday's Ring was a project that followed in the footsteps of Rumbleseat (Hot Water Music), Ann Beretta and other punk bands that produced acoustic music. The group slowly transformed, album after album, into country folk rock paying homage to their heroes: Bruce Springsteen, Johnny Cash, Tim Armstrong of Rancid, Steve Earle or even Shane Macgowan of the Pogues.

From 2000 to 2009, Yesterday's Ring released 4 albums and 2 EPs, going on tour several times (when the busy schedule of Sainte Catherines allows it); meeting the public all over Quebec, Canada, the United States and Europe. The band broke up in 2010 and it was during the 2020 pandemic that Fred and Hugo got together again to record a cover of a Steve Earle piece, as a gift for the ex-bassist's 40th birthday. and friend Balloo (Fifth Hour Hero/Mi Amore/Dig It Up). They enjoyed getting back into this musical universe so much that they decided to get together and start writing together again. Louis Valiquette soon joined them and they recorded a brand new record with longtime producer and collaborator Ryan Battistuzzi.

This new album entitled Goodbye Nightlife contains ten original songs and a cover of the Californian punk band; American steel (rainy day).

Now older and wiser, their state of mind is elsewhere, but they carry with them the memories of the good and bad times of their nightlife of the past. Goodbye Nightlife is a magnificent folk, country record, made with heart by experienced musicians. Yesterday's Ring multiplies collaborations, adding the great talents of Frankie Stubbs (Leatherface), Felicity Hamer (United Steel Workers of MTL) and Marc-André Beaudet (The Sainte Catherines) on vocals as well as Keith Douglas (Mariachi el Bronx, Mad Caddies) on trumpet, Cléo Beauchamp-Paquette (Miracles) on double bass and piano, Rich Bouthillier (The Sainte Catherines, ex-Yesterday's Ring) on drums, Ryan Battistuzzi on guitars, bass and keyboards, Joe Grass on pedal steel and Margaret Tractor with banjo, to make it a nostalgic opus certainly, but which will leave its mark for years to come.

THE JOHANS

It was in 2008 that Cynthia and Émilie developed an exceptional friendship. A meeting that will be decisive for young audiovisual students at Cégep Limoilou. At this moment, they discover that they share the same passion for music. Despite their strong desire to play music together, events would have otherwise. Émilie leaves the Old Capital to go to Matane where she will study photography until 2012. During this time, Cynthia tries to find her place through other groups, but she does not succeed. It was during Émilie's return to Quebec that the paths of the two artists crossed again. They experiment with several musical styles until they fall under the spell of Folk. Several events mark their journey. In reality, their appearance on the program Make as at home, hosted by MariePier Morin, was decisive in their musical career. They literally knew how to attract the attention of the producers. This visibility allowed them to produce their very first EP, under the name 56/62, in May 2017 and to participate in Canadian Music Week in Toronto. They also gave an extraordinary performance during their appearance at the Cabaret Festif! of the 2018 succession of Baie-St-Paul. Since then, they have taken part in the inauguration of Place Jean-Béliveau in Quebec City and twice at the Festival d'été de Québec. Nothing less for two young Quebec artists. The family is the theme at the heart of their various musical projects. The name "The Johans" refers to the mothers of the three founders of the group who are named "Johanne".
