The choreographic workshop proposes a vigorous and intimate process that challenges participating collaborators conceptually, physically, and personally in an attempt to continuously search for our true essence as artists and individuals. The process invites a collective questioning of political and philosophical ideals as the starting points for the creative process. Choreographically the work searches for presence rather than performance, and does so by juxtaposing complex physical languages that are investigated and collided in the body. The process challenges each artist towards an embodiment and deconstruction of unusual states — as situations that are both mental and physical. What is described as states — we question how they are internalized and externalized in coexistence with each other, with the aim to arrive at a physical language that is rhythmical, transparent, dynamic, virtuosic and vulnerable.

My interest is to maintain a collaborative, curious environment, where the nuances of each artist are harvested, and brought forth as languages that can dialogue with the work itself. With my background and explorations in industrial design, we will work through layers of moulded improvisation and choreographic tasks, questioning the body’s materiality and its relationship to time and space.

Andrea Peña

Originally from Bogotá, Colombia, Andrea Peña is a multidisciplinary artist whose creative practice transverses the fields of art installation, choreography and design. Andrea Peña and Artists is recognized for the creation of critical, alternative and spatial universes that rupture our notions of a sensible humanity. Interested in the depth of human individuality that breaches from a personal disposition as a bi-cultural artist, Peña’s approach is known for its difficult choreography as a highly intricate, vulnerable and somatic raw physicality that engages in deep encounters between the physical body and a highly conceptual research approach. With a background in industrial design her work borrows from visual art practices and spatial qualities of creative making, questioning the body as a material whom exists relationship to space and time. Peña’s highly intricate, vulnerable and raw choreography, is situated at a national and international scale presenting works in Hong Kong, Tokyo, Germany, Spain, India, Panama, Mexico, Dominican Republic and Canada. Peña has been highlighted with numerous awards for her conceptual and highly rigorous creations, recently including the 2018 Banff Arts Center's Clifford E. Lee Canadian Choreography award.
