Like the Bafing river, namesake of his band, the music of Alpha Yaya Diallo, winner of multiple Juno awards, flows down from Guinea’s Fouta-Djalon highlands and gorges itself with the rhythms of Mali before joining the vast expanse of world rhythms in Senegal. The fluid melodic lines of his guitar playing, both acoustic and electric, are complemented by an echo of the balafon, kora, ngoni, bass and drums to create a West-African sound that is both nomadic and generous. After 13 years, his eagerly awaited eighth album, Doye Doye (2023), more involved than ever, bears out this unbound approach to his roots.
