Since 2006, the Latino-influenced urban beats from Sonido Pesao (formerly Heavy Soundz) have led the Montréal cultural scene to new heights. The group, winner of the 2012 Syli d’Or of world music, chants its rap phrasing in Spanish, with a heavy dose of electro. At the time of writing, the group was working on a new album, Todo Revuelto, set for August. The first track, Dime Que Si, with Boogat, was released in June. Sonido Pesao will be bringing their new material during the Festival in what is expected to be a stunning show!

SONIDO PESAO

Sonido Pesao is a Montréal-based Latin urban and Latin rap group. Their compositions blend urban music, rap and electronic music in energetic fashion, backed by Latin beats. This collective, founded in 2006 and previously known as Heavy Soundz, now fully assumes its Hispanic identity. The group’s members, who come from Québec, Latin America and Hungary, form an explosive mix: Chele (Ronald Lemus Barrientos) and Lunatico (Marco-Antonio Abal Aguilar) are the two rappers and Katu (Catherine Molnár) is the singer, with Ian Lettre on drums, Javier Munoz Maldonado on guitar and Julien Senez-Gagnon on bass. Since the release of their album Tumba Parlantes in 2011, they have toured in Québec and across Canada, spreading their love of cultures and their contagious joie de vivre along the way. They have taken part in a number of major festivals, including the Montréal International Jazz Festival, the Festival International Nuits d’Afrique, the Pan American Games in Toronto (2015), the Festival Musique du Bout du Monde in Gaspé and the touring program of the Conseil des arts de Montréal (2017-2018), to name only a few. Winner of the Syli d'Or of world music in 2012, they also collaborate with various artists, among them Tomas Jensen and Ramon y su son and Lengualerta (Mexico). They took advantage of their third appearance on the television show Belle et Bum in November 2015 to showcase their extraordinary stage performances. These showmen were back in full force in 2016 with the album Reir Para No Llorar. The release of their new album, Todo Revuelto, is set for late summer 2020. To get us prepared, an initial excerpt, Dime Que Si, in collaboration with Boogát, is now available on digital platforms. In keeping with their reggaeton set to a cumbia background, the group is offering 10 new songs with underused sounds: musical styles from Brazil and the Balkans, salsa and old-school hip-hop. Sonido Pesao intends in this way to surprise its audience and to win over new followers by offering novel musical paths while remaining faithful to its roots.
