Concert 5 – The Music of the Mashriq

Sunday, October 10 – 7 p.m.

In this duet concert, Abdul-Wahab Kayyali (oud) and Joseph Khoury (percussion) recount the instrumental heritage of the Arab Orient, also known as the Mashriq. The repertoire will feature pieces from the contemporary musical heritage of the geographical area comprising Egypt, Greater Syria (Lebanon, Syria, Palestine and Jordan), and Iraq. It will include interpretations of traditional instrumental forms (Tahmila, Samai, and so on), as well as rhythmic and melodic improvisations and original compositions. The program will highlight the rhythmic and melodic wealth of the Mashriq and the tonal distinction of Arabic maqam music.

--------------

The free concert series Musique, horizons lointains invites you to explore faraway musical territories through artists with rich traditions from Iran, Peru, Brazil and Argentina. Each musician will share the sense of the tradition they have mastered and the search for new horizons to take us beyond geographical and temporal borders. Listening differently to instruments such as the setar, the charango, the piano or the bandoneon will then allow you to better feel the pulse of each tradition, its future and its universal values …
