THE PERFECT BASSDRUM

The bassdrum is widely regarded as the most important element/instrument in electronic music, as it constitues as the sonic foundation of every House or Techno track.

It is for this very reason, that a a great kick can propel a track into new heights, whereas the whole sound picture will deflate when the mix can’t bee moored on an adequate sonic anchor. This masterclass shines a spotlight on the – quite literally – fundamental elements of a club track, and we will have a detailed look at the following aspects:

– Sound selection: which bassdrum has the appropriate character for my track/genre?

– Sound sources: Samples, drum machines or VSTs?

– Sample treatment: Transient, phase, decay, length of the sample

– Drum tuning: making sure the low end is big and harmonious

– Sound processing: creating stronger grooves with EQ and compression

– Special tools: Rumble, sidechain and reverbs/delays

– The kick in context: how to make it sit right in between basslines and toms

– Control: Monitoring/metering and bassdrums

– The bigger picture: how to send a good balance to the mastering

With a client list that includes the likes of Âme, Ben Klock, Dixon, Stephan Bodzin and Tale Of Us, Hannes Bieger is one of Europe's most in-demand mixing engineers. In this in-depth workshop you'll spend the day with Hannes as he breaks the techniques he uses to mix some of the world's biggest club records. Expect lots of in-depth knowledge both technical and philosophical.
