Many of us live in information silos, geo-targeted and saturated by the messaging from our algorithmic echo-chambers. Can authors reach a broader audience and bridge the ideological divide by utilizing an unexpected voice or the opinion of an unlikeable character? This ability to shape a narrative by controlling information is called the Power of POV (Point of View). Three Canadian authors discuss how they utilize story narration to approach difficult topics from new angles. Hollay Ghadery (The Unravelling of Ou) employs the conceit of a sock-puppet narrator to explore the delicate folds of a women’s biological and cultural responsibilities. Sky Gilbert’s (The Blue House) unreliable narrator, a snide and jealous musical virtuoso who believes himself dead, unravels the debate around art as an inherently human mystery versus an algorithmic formulation. Lindsay Wong (Villain Hitting for Vicious Little Nobodies) weaves the perspective of three women from the same family to create a horror fantasy world of dark burial rituals that challenge our ideas of cultural identity.
