Claire Messud's latest novel was named one of the 10 Best Books of the Year by the Washington Post.

Claire Messud was born in Greenwich, Connecticut. Her mother was Canadian and her father French Algerian. In fact, his family settled in Algeria around 1850. A hundred years later, they relocated to France and other parts of the world. Claire herself spent part of her childhood in Australia, as well as Canada and the U.S. She's published many widely-praised novels, including her bestseller, The Emperor's Children. Her most recent book, This Strange Eventful History, draws on her own family's story, providing the intimacy of interiority set against social and political upheaval spanning seven decades, from 1940 to 2010. It's been described as "a tour de force", "brilliant and heart-breaking", and Messud as "one of contemporary literature's best."
