Yesterday's Ring

EN: Yesterday’s Ring is a country-folk band from Montreal founded in 2000 in Memphis, Tennessee, by singer Hugo Mudie, guitarist Fred Jacques and guitarist Louis Valiquette. Yesterday’s Ring was born from road adventures while the musicians were on tour in the United States with their punk band, The Sainte Catherines. Influenced by their first experiences in the south of the US and by country music playing on radio, the carefree musicians in their twenties started writing songs that would become, over the years, the soundtrack of the crazy and hectic life of a punk on tour in the pre-internet era. Originally, Yesterday’s Ring was a project that followed the steps of Rumbleseat (Hot Water Music), Ann Beretta and other punk bands that made acoustic music. The band slowly shifted, one album after the other, to country folk rock, paying tribute to their heroes: Bruce Springsteen, Johnny Cash, Tim Armstrong of Rancid, Steve Earle and Shane Macgowan of The Pogues. From 2000 to 2009, Yesterday’s Ring released 4 albums and 2 EPs, went on tour many times (when the Sainte Catherines’ busy schedule allowed it), to meet crowds in Québec, Canada, the United States and Europe. The band split in 2010 and it is during the 2020 pandemic that Fred and Hugo met again to record a cover of a Steve Earle song as a gift for the 40th birthday of their friend and ex-bassist Balloo (Fifth Hour Hero/Mi Amore/Dig It Up). They enjoyed getting back in this musical universe so much that they decided to get back together and to start writing again. Louis Valiquette soon joined them and they recorded a new album with long-time producer and collaborator Ryan Battistuzzi. This new album called Goodbye Nightlife has 10 original songs and one cover of the song Rainy Day of the California punk band, American Steel. Now older and wiser, their state of mind has changed but they keep within them the memories of the good and bad times of their past night lives. Goodbye Nightlife is a wonderful folk, country album made from the heart by experienced musicians. Yesterday’s Ring multiplies collaborations, featuring the great talents of Frankie Stubbs (Leatherface), Felicity Hamer (United Steel Workers of MTL) and Marc-André Beaudet (The Sainte Catherines) on vocals as well as Keith Douglas (Mariachi el Bronx, Mad Caddies) on the trumpet, Cléo Beauchamp-Paquette (Miracles) on the stand up bass and piano, Rich Bouthillier (The Sainte Catherines, ex-Yesterday’s Ring) on the drums, Ryan Battistuzzi on the guitars, bass and keys, Joe Grass on the pedal steel guitar and Margaret Tracteur on the banjo; to create a nostalgic opus, but one that will leave its mark for years to come.

FR : Yesterday's Ring est un groupe country folk de Montréal qui a été fondé à Memphis au Tennessee en 2000 par le chanteur Hugo Mudie, le guitariste Fred Jacques et le guitariste Louis Valiquette. Yesterday’s Ring est né des expériences sur la route, alors que les musiciens étaient en tournée aux États-Unis avec leur formation punk, The Sainte Catherines. Influencés par leurs premières expériences dans le sud-américain, et par le country qui jouait à la radio, les musiciens insouciants dans la vingtaine ont commencés à écrire des chansons qui deviendraient, au fil des ans, la trame sonore de la vie trépidante et folle de punks en tournée à l’ère pré-internet. À l'origine, Yesterday’s Ring était un projet qui suivait les traces de Rumbleseat (Hot Water Music), Ann Beretta et autres groupes punks qui produisaient de la musique acoustique. Le groupe s'est lentement transformé, album après album, en country folk rock rendant hommage à leurs héros: Bruce Springsteen, Johnny Cash, Tim Armstrong de Rancid, Steve Earle ou encore Shane Macgowan des Pogues. De 2000 à 2009, Yesterday's Ring a sorti 4 albums et 2 EPs, partant plusieurs fois en tournée (quand l’horaire chargé des Sainte Catherines le permettait); allant à la rencontre du public un peu partout au Québec, au Canada, aux États-Unis et en Europe. Le groupe s'est séparé en 2010 et c’est durant la pandémie de 2020 que Fred et Hugo se sont à nouveau réunis pour enregistrer une reprise d’une pièce de Steve Earle, comme cadeau pour le 40e anniversaire de l'ex-bassiste et ami Balloo (Fifth Hour Hero/Mi Amore/ Dig It Up). Ils ont tellement apprécié de se replonger dans cet univers musical qu'ils ont décidé de se réunir et de recommencer à écrire ensemble. Louis Valiquette s’est rapidement joint à eux et ils ont enregistrés un tout nouveau disque avec le réalisateur et collaborateur de longue date Ryan Battistuzzi. Ce nouvel album intitulé Goodbye Nightlife contient dix chansons originales et une reprise du groupe punk Californien; American Steel (Rainy Day). Maintenant plus âgés et plus sages, leur état d’esprit est ailleurs, mais ils gardent en eux les souvenirs des bons et mauvais coups de leurs vies nocturnes du passé. Goodbye Nightlife est un magnifique disque folk, country, fait avec coeur par des musiciens d’expérience. Yesterday’s Ring multiplie les collaborations, ajoutant les grands talents de Frankie Stubbs (Leatherface), Felicity Hamer (United Steel Workers of MTL) et Marc-André Beaudet ( The Sainte Catherines ) au chant ainsi que Keith Douglas (Mariachi el Bronx, Mad Caddies) à la trompette, Cléo Beauchamp-Paquette (Miracles) à la contrebasse et au piano, Rich Bouthillier (The Sainte Catherines, ex-Yesterday's Ring) à la batterie, Ryan Battistuzzi aux guitares, basse et claviers, Joe Grass au pedal steel et Margaret Tracteur au banjo, pour en faire un opus nostalgique certes, mais qui laissera son empreinte pour des années à venir.
